70 years after U.S. nuclear tests in Bikini Atoll, Japan port recalls legacy

Miura, Kanagawa Pref. –

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the 1954 U.S. hydrogen bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, which exposed Japanese fishing boats and crews to radiation.

At Misaki Port in Kanagawa Prefecture, one of the country’s leading fishing ports and renowned for its large tuna hauls, turmoil ensued after radioactive substances were detected on more than 150 tuna fishing boats.
